194 Years of Independence

Tens of thousands of people gathered on Fifth Avenue to watch the Greek parade and celebrate Greek Independence on March 29.

Elected officials from Astoria and Long Island City marched in the parade, including state Senator Michael Gianaris, Assemblywoman Aravella Simotas and Councilman Costa Constantinides. John Catsimatidis and former Councilman Peter Vallone Jr. were also present for the festivities.

The parade celebrated the 194th anniversary of Greek Independence and the achievements of the Greek American community.

Organized by the Federation of Hellenic Societies of Greater New York, the 77th annual Greek Parade started on 64th Street at 1:45 p.m. and continued to 79th Street.

This year’s Grand Marshals included Governor Andrew Mark Cuomo, Mr. and Mrs. John P. Calamos of Calamos Investments and Mr. and Mrs. John Psaras.


John Catsimatidis and former Councilman Peter Vallone Jr., John Catsimatidis and former Councilman Peter Vallone Jr., The annual Greek Independence Day Parade has become a New York City traditional event. The parade began in 1938 and since 1951 it has been taking place on Fifth Avenue.

“As the first Greek American to hold elected office in New York, I am deeply proud of the many contributions Greek Americans have made to our city and our country,” said Gianaris. “It is an honor to declare March 2015 Greek History Month in the state of New York, and it is truly a pleasure each year to join so many in celebrating Greek heritage in New York as we march up Fifth Avenue.”
