Mia Pizza

Mia Pizza is a neighborhood favorite, especially when it comes to take-out, located on Ditmars Blvd. and Crescent Street in Astoria. Mia Pizza is run by a local Astorian for the local market. Amiable owner Joey Hernandez was born and raised on this block and attended local P.S. 122. He proudly serves the neighborhood he grew up in with fine, tasty pizza with a tender, crisp crust, with all your favorite toppings. Besides the fantastic pizza, there are pasta dishes, meat and shrimp entrees and lots of tasty bites.

Mia Pizza opened two years ago and has been perfecting its secret recipe pizza sauce and marinara sauce ever since. With just the right balance of herbs and garlic, these sauces tasted great on the house specialty “Grandma” pie and the old-fashioned Sicilian pie topped with four distinctly tasty cheeses. There are plenty of other pizzas to choose among including the super popular chicken Marsala pizza. I admit, I was skeptical about the chicken Marsala pizza until I tasted it. The tender chicken in slightly sweet Marsala wine tops the crisp crust and zesty cheese. During the time I spent in Mia Pizza, three people came in to order the chicken Marsala pizza, so they are on to something for sure. Be adventurous and top your pizza with Buffalo chicken, meatballs, sausage, pepperoni, mushrooms, artichoke hearts, olives, or try the Hawaiian pizza with ham and pineapple.

The phone at Mia Pizza rings off the hook for orders to go, though I dined in at one of the 4 petite tables decked in red and white, checkered tablecloths. Sit down here for lunch at Mia Pizza and wrap two hands around one of their hot hero sandwiches such as shrimp, chicken, meatball, or veal Parmigiana. Sausage, peppers, and onions or Philly cheese steak taste great on crusty, warm bread. The chicken rolls, sausage or pepperoni rolls, or pepperoni wheels all make great snacks or lunch, along with garlic knots that will keep the vampires away! These sandwiches go well with one of Mia Pizza’s salads such as the spinach salad with walnuts, gorgonzola cheese, and raspberry vinaigrette, or the classic Greek, Caesar, or Caprese salad with fresh mozzarella and tomato.

Think of Mia Pizza for dinner entrees too, with options like chicken Francese with a light lemon sauce, chicken cacciatore with tomato, onions, and mushrooms, or chicken Marsala without the pizza. My chicken Francese was fork-tender and delicious, served with a vegetable, pasta or salad for a complete meal at just $11. Plump, juicy shrimp are prepared Francese style, marinara, Diabolo with spicy sauce, and classic shrimp scampi with lots of garlic and pasta to soak it up. Keep it meat-free with eggplant rollatini or Parmigiana and your order will be at your home in minutes, hot and ready to eat.

Specialty pastas at Mia Pizza include the chef’s penne with chicken cutlet, spinach, and mozzarella with vodka sauce ($13). You’ll also find linguine a Felipo with chicken, sausage, broccoli, and tomatoes, linguine with clam sauce or classic penne alla vodka and spaghetti with meatballs. Baked pastas like homemade lasagna, ziti, and stuffed shells satisfy your palate and your soul.
