Santorum Visits Bay Terrace

Former GOP presidential candidate Rick Santorum and his wife, Karen, visited the Barnes & Noble at Bay Terrace on February 10 for a signing of the book they wrote with their eldest daughter, Elizabeth, Bella’s Gift: How One Little Girl Transformed Our Family and Inspired a Nation. More than 100 people attended the event. Santorum, a former U.S. Senator, is also the chairman of Patriot Voices which, according to their website, is a grassroots organization committed to fighting for faith, family, freedom and opportunity in America. Bella’s Gift chronicles the life of Rick and Karen Santorum’s youngest daughter who was born with Trisomy 18, a condition of having three number 18 chromosomes, and how her life touched not only their close-knit family but the whole nation. “Senator Santorum is just like many residents of Northeast Queens,” said Patriot Voices’ New York State Chair Elio Forcina. “I believe the residents of Queens connected with Mr. Santorum more than any other national political figure.” Brought into the national spotlight during the 2012 presidential campaign, Bella became a topic of national news, but her whole story has not been told until now. Bella’s Gift tells the touching and sometimes painful story of how the Santorum family was transformed by Bella’s life. The book offers hope and guidance for parents of children with disabilities. —Jason D. Antos
