Spirit Of Burned Church Warms Worshippers

BY LIZ GOFF

Parishioners at Our Lady of Sorrows R.C. Church have been worshipping under a large tent set up by volunteers following a devastating fire that ravaged the church on January 4.

More than 10,000 worshippers are huddling beneath the tent for dozens of services each Saturday and Sunday since the fire, church officials said.

Not a problem, parishioners said. The tent is equipped with space heaters to help word-off the recent frigid, blustery weather and large screen monitors have been installed in the tent to help bring services closer to the worshippers. “We’re doing our best to keep the spirit of the church alive while we raise funds for repairs,” one parishioner said. “An the spirit of the church is helping to keep u s warm.”

Church officials have established a fund for parishioners and members of the public who would like to help defray the cost of renovations needed to restore the fire ravaged house of worship.

Investigators believe a wiring problem sparked the blaze that resulted in significant damage to the roof and the choir loft at the church on 04th Street and 37th Avenue in Corona. Necessary repairs will take moths to complete, a spokesperson for the Diocese of Brooklyn and Queens said.

Donations in the form of a check or money order may be made payable to the Our Lady Of Sorrows Restoration Fund and mailed to the church at 104-11-57th Avenue, Corona, New York 11368.
