Manor Celebrates Octoberfest At Atlas Park

It’s Oktoberfest year-round at Manor Oktoberfest, both the Glendale and Forest Hills locations, but the weekend of September 27 and 28 brought a special Oktoberfest celebration just downstairs from the Bavarian restaurant in Glendale, at the grassy center of The Shops at Atlas Park. Bratwursts sizzled and cold beer flowed while people celebrating their German heritage – and anyone else interested in fun and good food – gathered to eat, drink and enjoy authentic entertainment on the sunny, warm fall weekend. The first thing I did was to sample an ample brat – juicy, savory, and with just the right amount of snap, nestled in a perfectly soft but substantial roll, and smothered with spicy German mustard – pure wiener heaven!

Owner Mark Gallagher was back and forth, manning the grill and overseeing the cold brew station as German influenced rock band, Die Schlauberger, provided some high octane music. The young German folk-dance troupe, Die Erste

Gottscheer Tanzgruppe, also performed, while the enthusiastic crowd linked arms and sang along.

Though bratwursts, frankfurters, pretzels and pastries were the festival foods of the day, lovers of delicious and hearty German food enjoyed other traditional delicacies in the restaurant’s dining room, bar and terrace. The offerings at both Manor Oktoberfest locations included Kassler Rippchen, a smoked loin pork chop; wienerschnitzel, a breaded pork cutlet; sauerbraten, marinated roast beef; stuffed cabbage, potato pancakes, German potato salad, homemade sauerkraut, spaetzle, pierogies and Polish style kielbasa, as well as American fare such as steak, burgers, grilled chicken, sandwiches, salads and hot wings. Lots of folks were partaking of the fine European beers that the restaurant serves as well: more than 30 varieties of draft and bottled, imported and domestic brews. Meanwhile, back at the outdoor festivities, partyers Fred and Barbara Rueckher of Glendale got in the spirit, sporting traditional costumes, and little Maria Pehr danced to the band in her own authentic outfit. Revelers of all ages picnicked at the rows of tables set up for the day and took in the cheerful atmosphere and camaraderie.

Oktoberfest is celebrated around the world every fall from the middle of

September through the first weekend of October, though the largest Oktoberfest celebration in the world is held every year in Munich, Bavaria, Germany. Mark

Gallagher certainly put on one good party as his contribution to the worldwide celebrations. But don’t worry if you didn’t make it to Atlas Park this weekend; you can indulge in the food and fun every month and season of the year at both

Manor Oktoberfest locations, where you can always experience some good old

German Gemütlichkeit – translation: a relaxed good time!
