Education Nonprofit Zone 126 Gets First Book Grant
Zone 126 received a First Book grant and distributed 2,100 books to Astoria and LIC children.
Zone 126, an education based nonprofit received the books as the recipient of the First Book grant in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. Grants are awarded to schools and local partners in communities where 70 percent or more of children come from low income families.
“Zone 126 is grateful to have been awarded 2,100 books from First Book, which have been distributed to children and families of Astoria/Long Island City this year. A predictor of childhood literacy is access to a home library. These books are the first for many of our children,” said Zone 126 Executive Director Maritza Arroyo-Diaz.
Zone 126 donated the books to local elementary, intermediate and high school partners’ libraries, as well as to parent engagement workshops covering Core Curriculum reading techniques and local community events. The remaining books were donated at last week’s elementary school parent teacher conferences of P.S. 76, P.S. 11, P.S. 112, P.S. 171 and P.S. 234 in which Zone 126 staff greeted parents and handed out books to eager students.
Zone126 coordinates and drives the efforts of a group of individuals and organizations with a common mission of seeing all children from Astoria and Long Island City’s Zones of Promise graduate from high school and attain post-secondary education by providing programs and services from cradle to career. We intend to achieve this mission by analyzing gaps in programs and services, address those gaps by providing programs and services to children and youth, from birth through age 18 and beyond, and correlate program and service data to individual school performance to drive relevant and significant results. This is called Collective Impact, which is the logical approach to truly eliminating the achievement and opportunity gaps.
Zone 126 is located at 31-10 23rd St., Ground Floor, Astoria, NY 11106, 347-960-2102. For more information about Zone 126, visit www.zone126.org, Facebook.com/Zone126 and Twitter, handle: Zone126Queens.
