Gianaris Hosts P.S./I.S. 78 Student Council Elections
State Senator Michael Gianaris joined P.S./I.S. 78 Principal Louis Pavone and students in Long Island City for the Student Council elections, offering advice and sharing his experiences regarding the democratic process. Gianaris attended the elections last year as well, and is excited about making the event an annual tradition.
“I am thrilled to see our young people be so enthusiastic about participating in student government,” said Gianaris. “Democracy works best when everyone participates, and I am pleased to see the students here at P.S./I.S. 78 working together to make their school an even better place to learn.”
Gianaris encouraged the students to be active and engaged on community issues, noting that his own work in the community led directly to him becoming an elected official. Several students asked how they could become a state senator, and Gianaris told them that if they worked hard in school and listened to their teachers and their parents, nothing would be out of reach.
