Louis Armstrong Museum To Celebrate Satchmo’s Birthday
Jazz legend Louis Armstrong always believed that his birthday was the 4th of July. It wasn’t until after his death in 1971 when a researcher discovered that his actual birthday was Aug. 4, 1901. On July 4, the Louis Armstrong House Museum held its first Hot Jazz / Cool Garden Summer Concert with Bria Skonberg and Bria’s Hot Five. Birthday cake, a complimentary tasting of red beans ‘n’ rice (his favorite recipe) and sweet tea were served.
For those who couldn’t make it for the first birthday celebration, the Louis Armstrong House Museum will be hosting a second bash on August 4 (in recognition of Satchmo’s actual birthday) at 2:00 p.m.
Guests will be treated to a musical performance by the York College Summer Jazz Program participants who will perform in Armstrong’s garden. This annual concert showcases outstanding high school musicians from all five boroughs. It’s free and yes, there will be cake.
