Maloney To 9/11 Survivors: Apply For Compensation Now

Congressmember Carolyn Maloney (NY-12), Congressmember Jerry Nadler (NY-10), the New York Committee for Occupational Safety and Health (NYCOSH), the New York AFL-CIO and the Uniformed Firefighters Association joined 9/11 first responders and survivors, and other advocacy groups at 7 World Trade Center June 24 to urge eligible 9/11 first responders and survivors to apply for economic compensation through the 9/11 James Zadroga Act’s Victim Compensation Fund (VCF). The deadline to apply for VCF coverage is Oct. 3, 2013.
VCF is part of the 9/11 James Zadroga Act, which Maloney and Nadler sponsored. VCF provides economic compensation to 9/11 first responders and survivors, and their family members.
“It is so important that we make sure that anybody who is eligible for VCF coverage knows what is available to him or her, and knows to apply for those benefits before Oct. 3, 2013. Responders and survivors can apply for compensation for economic and non-economic losses—such as pain and suffering—that resulted from injuries,” said Maloney. “Many of these men and women were there for us in our darkest hour.  Now, we need to be there for them.”
Maloney applauded NYCOSH, 9/11 Health Watch and labor leaders for launching an outreach program to spread information on health coverage and compensation for first responders and survivors, and their family members. She also championed the idea, introduced by 9/11 Health Watch, of placing a digital countdown clock on the Web site of congressional representatives and activist organizations, to remind eligible applicants to seek compensation by the Oct. 3, 2013 deadline.
The September 11 Victim Compensation Fund was reopened in 2010 when Congress passed, and President Obama signed into law the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act. Maloney co-authored the bill and Nadler co-sponsored it. The Zadroga law provides health care and economic compensation for first responders and survivors of the 9/11 terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and in Shankesville, PA.
