(L. to r.); State Senator Michael Gianaris (D-Astoria), Democratic District Leader and city council candidate Costa Constantinides and Assemblymember Aravella Simotas (DAstoria) in front of P.S. 84 in Astoria. Costa Constantinides was endorsed on May 31 by state Senator Michael Gianaris and Assemblymember Aravella Simotas for the City Council’s 22nd District, which represents Astoria, along with parts of Long Island City, Woodside, East Elmhurst and Jackson Heights.

“I am honored to have the support of the Senator Gianaris and Assemblymember Simotas,” said Constantinides. “We have worked together to improve the quality of life in Astoria and to increase the sense of community through joint local programs. I look forward to continuing our progressive work in the neighborhood.”

Both Gianaris and Simotas represent Astoria and surrounding neighborhoods in the state legislature.

Gianaris and Simotas join dozens of community leaders, labor unions and political action committees in endorsing Constantinides’ city council campaign.

Constantinides has already been endorsed by Congressmember Joseph Crowley (D-NY), several members of the city council, New York’s Working Families Party, Central Labor Council, Brooklyn-Queens National Organization for Women Political Action Committee (NOW PAC), Hotel Trades Council, Local 32BJ Service Employees International Union, Amalgamated Transit Union, City Council’s Progressive Caucus Alliance, and Democracy for NYC.

“I am proud to endorse Costa Constantinides for New York city council,” announced Simotas. “Costa is a lifelong Astorian and a real champion for Western Queens. His tireless advocacy on environmental and transportation issues, and his support for our public schools make it clear that he will be an effective leader in the city council for our community.”

“I am proud to endorse Costa Constantinides to be our next councilmember and look forward to serving the people of Western Queens together,” said Gianaris. “As a member of our community, Costa has demonstrated his ability to be a fierce advocate for the people of Astoria. His work on behalf of our neighborhood and his experience as a top staff member in the city council make him a great choice.”

Constantinides is a grassroots community organizer, progressive political leader, husband and father who has lived in Astoria his whole life. In 2009, Constantinides was elected as the Democratic District Leader for the 36th Assembly District Part A.

Constantinides has a long history of successfully advocating for Astoria. He has worked within the community to organize food drives, help save the Grand Avenue Post Office, fight for traffic safety and clean air and worked with local elected officials to ensure Astoria received its fair share of funding for various programs. As a Deputy Chief of Staff in the city council, Constantinides has been instrumental on key legislation to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, to protect our wetlands, and improve the safety of drinking water. He also serves as a board member of the United Community Civic Association (UCCA).
