Bayside-Whitestone Lions Hold Scholarship Dinner

The Bayside-Whitestone Lions Club held its second annual Scholarship Dinner on Thursday, May 9, at Verdi’s in Whitestone. The Lions honored nine local high school seniors for academic excellence and outstanding community service:

Bayside H.S. - Jon Rubio and Jagdeep Singh

Benjamin N. Cardozo H.S. - Nicole Javorsky and Nathalia Ayala Aguilera

Holy Cross H.S. - Dennis Egan and Rahul Gill

St. Francis Preparatory School - Alex Heracleous and Cristina Taibi

World Journalism Preparatory School - Luca Damasco

Each of the students was awarded a scholarship towards their college education in front of over 100 members of the community. Elected officials, including state Senator Toby Ann Stavisky, Councilmember Peter F. Vallone Jr., Assemblymembers Nily Rozic and Ed Braunstein, as well as representatives of the offices City Comptroller John Liu, Queens District Attorney Richard Brown, Public Advocate Bill de Blasio, and Queens Borough President Helen M. Marshall, provided numerous outstanding citations to each student that will cover their walls for years to come.

Scholarship Chairman and Past President Paul Vallone spoke with pride when summarizing the numerous accomplishments and charitable contributions the students have already achieved. The Bayside-Whitestone Lions have raised over $10,000 in two years for their scholarship program. The club also installed its officers and board members for 2013-2014 and introduced their new President Barbara Leonardi. Past District Governor Pauline Francis, conducted the installation of all officers who took an oath of dedication to their community and Lionism. The audience was also treated to a vocal performance by local young singers Catena Vallone, Sofia Luetich, and Danielle Pulisic.

The Bayside-Whitestone Lions Club will hold its last meeting of the year on Wednesday, June 5 at 7:00 p.m. at the Clearview Golf Course, 202-12 Willets Point Blvd. All are welcome to attend.
