QEDC, City Announce StartUP! Business Plan Finalists

The Queens Economic Development Corporation (QEDC) has announced the nine finalists of the seventh annual Queens StartUP! Business Plan Competition, a five-month challenge-and-instruction course sponsored by Citi.
During a networking event at Flushing Town Hall on April 4, QEDC announced that Citi judges had selected the following finalists:
•Community Development - Himalayan Couture, Fabulous Fitness NYC and Magda Care Training Services.
•Food - Gooey & Co., a specialty bakery producing cakes famous in St. Louis since 1930; Astoria Coffee; and Take a Break & I’ll Bake, a family-owned and operated bakery that helps nonprofits raise money by selling their products.
•Innovation - M3D Consulting, a green management and policy consulting firm; Return on Change, an online crowdfunding platform that gives startups access to investors; and the Law Office of Renee M. Simpson, which serves immigrants.
From this pool of nine finalists, the Citi judges will choose three winners and award each $10,000. The announcement will be made at Queens Taste 2013 at Citi Field’s Caesars Club on May 14.
Over the course of the StartUP! competition, roughly 250 participants received technical assistance and training on how to start a small business. They also had access to entrepreneurial resources at the Queens Central Library in Jamaica. Then, a total of 35 teams submitted business plans to the judges.
“Citi is once again pleased to support the Seventh Annual StartUp! competition with a $50,000 grant from the Citi Foundation,” said Eileen Auld, NY Tri State Region director, Citi Community Development.
“Queens Library is ready and eager to put our valuable business-related information and resources toward helping this year’s StartUP! participants, and all the businesses in Queens, succeed and grow,” added Thomas W. Galante, president and CEO, Queens Library.
“The StartUP! competition seems to get better and better each year,” added QEDC Executive Director Seth Bornstein. “Congratulations to all this year’s participants, and we wish them the best of luck as they pursue their business dreams.
Last year’s StartUP! winners were: Itizi Gourmet Ice Cream Truck, in the “Food-Based Business” category; the “Innovative Business” category prize went to “Seez-it” labels manufacturer; Better Speech Now, a startup which provides accent-reduction services, took top place in the “Social Enterprise” category.
