QUEENS GOP OFFICIALLY ENDORSES CATSIMATIDIS FOR MAYOR: The Queens County Republican Party officially endorsed supermarket magnate John Catsimatidis as its candidate for New York City mayor in this year’s election.
Accepting the organization’s support, Catsimatidis declared, “I will work hard to earn New Yorkers’ faith and trust and votes, and when I am mayor, I will work harder still.”
The organization’s chairman, Phil Ragusa, predicted success for Catsimatidis because, “for the past 20 years [the organization] has played a vital role in nominating common sense mayors who can win and govern well and independently”. Without naming names he must have been referring to former Mayor Rudy Giuliani and incumbent Mayor Michael Bloomberg, both Republicans.
Ragusa also noted that Catsimatidis, who operates a chain of supermarkets, “has the right experience as an independent businessman to lead New York and solve our city’s problems”.
It appears now that Republicans in the city will be engaging in a primary to select their candidate because former MTA Chairman Joseph Lhota is also seeking to be the GOP candidate in November.
