GYRO UNO PIZZERIA RESTAURANT

28-01 Steinway Street / 28th Avenue Astoria / 718.274.4870

g yro Uno has been a fixture on the corner of Steinway Street and 28th Avenue for 24 years, serving the Astoria community delicious meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner, seven days a week. In June, Jimmy and Stella Stathopoulos have taken over ownership of this thriving restaurant with the same commitment to quality and value. Jimmy has spent most of his life in the restaurant business, starting as a dishwasher, and later, he bought the Olympic Flame Diner on the upper west side of Manhattan, which he has owned for the last 20 years. Fear not, the same great dishes remain at Gyro Uno, especially their house made signature gyro, made from high quality beef and lamb using a 30-year old, secret recipe.

Start with some of their house made tzatziki sauce and warm pita bread, or a bowl of their delicious soups, made fresh each day, including chicken noodle, lentil, vegetable, and Yankee bean. Their spinach pie is legendary…a flavorful combination of spinach, onion, leeks and feta cheese in crispy Phyllo pastry. Unlike some others, this spinach pie is neither heavy, greasy, nor salty…just delicious! A generous Greek salad comes topped with excellent feta cheese, stuffed grape leaves and olives and makes a nice lunch or side salad. Everyone loves the Buffalo wings, mozzarella sticks and chicken fingers, especially the kids.

It all starts with their wonderful gyro and souvlaki. Perhaps the best way to enjoy them both is to order the combo which allows you to sample both the gyro and chicken kebabs along with a side of Greek salad and your choice of French fries, rice or their fabulous lemon potatoes. You can also have these juicy meats piled onto a pita sandwich with lettuce, tomato, onion and their creamy tzatziki sauce. From the sizzling grill come sausages, juicy pork chops, lamb chops and rib steak. Juicy burgers are 100 percent beef and 150 percent delicious, made with your favorite toppings. This time I tried some of their wonderful Greek specialties that are made from family recipes. The pastitsio is a wonderful casserole of pasta, seasoned ground beef, and a light b├ęchamel topping. The mousaka eggplant casserole is great too. Spaghetti and meatballs is popular here, as is the chicken or eggplant parmigiana.

At lunchtime, the phone rings off the hook and orders fly out the door. Gyro Uno makes awesome pizza from scratch, made with all your favorite toppings. Order a crispy crust pie in a personal small size, medium or large, to stay or to go. Stromboli rolls, chicken rolls and calzones are popular as well, and hot heros are made with freshly baked bread loaded with meatballs, chicken cutlet parmigiana, eggplant parm, peppers and eggs, grilled chicken breast and more. These two-handed heros will satisfy even the heartiest appetite and they’re reasonably priced.

Gyro Uno opens at 10am for breakfast to stay or to go. They’ll pack up an egg, bacon and cheese sandwich to go in just minutes and send you on your way along with a steaming cup of fresh brewed coffee. Eat more leisurely in the dining room and enjoy an omelet filled with ham, cheese, veggies, with or without a side of crispy bacon. All egg and omelet dishes are served with home fries and toast.

Gyro Uno will happily cater your Super Bowl party or any party, for that matter. With trays of chicken parmigiana, gyro and Greek salad, your party is sure to be a hit. Come eat here and watch the game on the big screen T.V. if you like.

Gyro Uno is open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch, and dinner from 10:00am to 10:30pm. There’s fast, free delivery through www.delivery.com and www.grubhub.com." Cater your next business or family lunch or dinner and leave the cooking to Gyro Uno. Welcome Jimmy and Stella to the neighborhood!
