Constantinides Endorsed by New York City Council Progressive Caucus Alliance
Costa Constantinides was one of the first candidates endorsed by the New York City Council’s Progressive Caucus for the Council’s 22nd District, which represents Astoria along with parts of Long Island City and Woodside.
“I’m honored to have the support of the hard-working, dedicated members of the New York City Council that comprise the Progressive Caucus,” said Costa Constantinides. “I am ready to be the next City Councilman for District 22. I have a vision for a better Northwest Queens and a better New York. I believe we can have the best schools, the finest parks, the safest streets, cleaner air, provide for our seniors, and expand our world-class hospital here in Astoria.”
The Progressive Caucus -- in partnership with a coalition of activists, donors, and labor unions --
will work to elect community organizers and other progressives who will prioritize creating good jobs, investing in our city’s neighborhoods and sustainable infrastructure, defending civil liberties, supporting public education, and promoting good and effective local government.
The endorsement solidifies Costa as a champion of these progressive goals and an advocate for working families.
“As New Yorkers, we have inherited a vibrant, diverse city, and a rich progressive history,” said City Council Member Brad Lander of Brooklyn, chair of the Progressive Caucus Alliance. “From building the subway system, to welcoming immigrants, to creating affordable housing, to campaign finance reforms, NYC has led the way in policies dedicated to promoting justice, equality, and opportunity in a thriving city. Unfortunately, that commitment to equality and inclusion has weakened in recent years, and inequality and homelessness are now at all-time highs. Progressive NYC will renew that commitment.”
Endorsements were approved by a majority vote of the PCA following a comprehensive interview process. In the coming months, the PCA will boost the campaign by raising money, recruiting volunteers, and providing technical support.
Costa has previously been endorsed by New York’s Working Families Party and the UFCW Local 1500, the largest supermarket union in the city.
Costa Constantinides is a grassroots community organizer, attorney, progressive political leader, husband and father who has lived in Astoria his whole life. In 2009, Costa was elected as the Democratic District Leader for the 36th Assembly District.
Costa Constantinides has a long history of successfully advocating for Astoria. Costa has worked within the community to organize food drives, help save the Grand Avenue Post Office, fights for traffic safety and clean air and worked with local elected officials to ensure Astoria received its fair share of funding for various programs. As a Deputy Chief of Staff in the New York City Council, Costa has been instrumental on key legislation to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, to protect our wetlands, and improve the safety of drinking water. He also serves as a board member of the United Community Civic Association (UCCA).
