Van Bramer, Sunnysiders Rally For Foodtown

On December 6, Councilmember Jimmy Van Bramer rallied with more than 100 local residents, Community Board 2 Chair Joe Conley, and supermarket workers to save Sunnyside’s Foodtown. In just under two weeks, the community supermarket is scheduled to close. During the rally, the community called on the property’s landlord, who has rejected numerous offers from Foodtown, to come back to negotiating with them.  Suzy Szabo, a Sunnyside resident who has worked at the supermarket for nearly 30 years was on hand to talk about the difficulties she will face when her and her colleagues’ jobs will be moved out of the borough to locations in The Bronx and Brooklyn. Sunnyside residents and members of local civic associations also expressed their concern about losing the popular supermarket which they say has provided them with affordable food. Hundreds of residents also signed a petition in an effort to save the supermarket and highlight the landlord’s obligation toward keeping Greenpoint Avenue busy with commercial activity.
