State Senators Jose Peralta, Joseph Addabbo Jr. and Malcolm Smith with some of the children who were cheered up at Peralta’s annual holiday toy drive, this year devoted to those affected by Hurricane Sandy, and held at the Queens Center mall. State Senators Jose Peralta, Joseph Addabbo Jr. and Malcolm Smith, in conjunction with Queens Center, provided toys and holiday cheer December 8 to more than 400 children from Queens communities ravaged by Hurricane Sandy.
Children and their families were transported by bus to Queens Center from Howard Beach, Far Rockaway and Breezy Point. The toys were donated by Queens Center. Transportation was donated by Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1056.
“Since Sandy hit, I’ve been working with my colleagues, Senators Addabbo and Smith, on helping however I can, holding drives to collect food, clothes and  supplies for victims,” Peralta said.  “And so for my annual holiday toy drive, I reached out to them about doing something for kids who are going through tough times this holiday season.
“As in years past, I was able to count on the generosity of the folks at the Queens Center,” Peralta added. “And because of all of the transportation issues in the Rockaways and Howard Beach, we needed buses to get the children and their families to Queens Center. I reached out to ATU 1056 and they stepped up.”
