Photos Jason D. Antos The United Community Civic Association (UCCA) held its 20th annual holiday brunch at the LaGuardia Marriott, where several elected officials and community members were honored.
The Sunday, December 9 morning event was well attended and featured appearances by City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, City Comptroller John Liu and Congressmember Joe Crowley.
The honorees included Donna Raymond, president of the North Queens Homeowners Civic Association who was given the Valerie Fisher Community Service Award; Assemblymember Aravella Simotas, who received the Woman of the Year Award; and Assemblymember Michael DenDekker and Councilmember Daniel Dromm who both received the Community Unity Award. This was the first time this award was given by UCCA to elected officials.
Councilmember Daniel Dromm, his mother Audrey Gallagher and City Comptroller John Liu. “DenDekker and Dromm are most deserving of this honor because they are two elected officials who have reached outside their own districts to preserve amity,” said UCCA President Rose Marie Poveromo.
Also present at the ceremony were Councilmember Peter Vallone Jr., state Senators Jose Peralta and Michael Gianaris, as well as District Leaders and Members of the UCCA Board of Directors Carolyn Scarano, Costa Constantinides and Maureen Allen.
UCCA was also presented with a commendation from Liu’s office for its 20 years of service to the community.
