Nick’s Bistro is one of Forest Hills’ favorite corner restaurants. Featuring fresh fish, Greek specialties including lamb chops, souvlaki, pasta dishes, American classic burgers, wraps, and surf and turf, Nick’s Bistro offers casual, yet upmarket dining at very reasonable prices. The relaxing, sleek interior features dark wood floors, a long banquette and about a dozen or so tables for an intimate dinner for two or a family meal. Soft lighting and music at just the right volume, add to the ambience.

Nick’s Bistro was opened three years ago by owners Mario Savvas and Rob Sarris who run a tight ship and insist on only the finest, freshest ingredients for their delicious cuisine. Jerry, your faithful server, has been here from the beginning and anticipates your every need, and always with a smile. While we sipped on a glass of pinot noir, Jerry brought the house’s famous hummus and tender black eyed peas to be spread upon triangles of

warm pita bread. The special appetizer of the day was Greek style mussels and we couldn’t resist them prepared in a tomato sauce with a touch of feta cheese melted in to enhance the flavor of the tender mussels. From the menu, we ordered handmade dolmades, which are stuffed grape leaves, this time filled with ground pork, lamb, rice, and delicate seasoning, served warm and four to an order ($8). Keftedes are Cypriot style meatballs, also scented with spices and cinnamon. Loukaniko are handmade Greek country style sausages, mildly spiced and grilled until crisp on the outside and juicy in the center ($8). Portobello mushroom caps are filled with crabmeat stuffing then topped with a light béchamel sauce that is just delicious. Nick’s octopus is impossibly tender, dressed with red onion and wine vinegar. Fried calamari are great for sharing and the kids will love chicken fingers or wings, and fried mozzarella sticks.

Their generously sized salads can be shared as a side dish or enjoyed as a main course. The ahi tuna is perfectly seared with a sesame seed crust, sliced and arranged over a mound of mesclun greens, tomatoes, cucumbers, and avocado with a sesame citrus dressing. Nick’s pick is the classic Greek with lots of fresh, crunchy veggies, creamy feta cheese and olives.

For our main course, we shared dishes from the land and sea. The baby lamb chops were juicy and so tender, served with your choice of lemon potatoes (yes, order them!), French fries or rice. My dining companion ordered the flaky fillet of sole stuffed with a balanced combination of fresh spinach and feta cheese, broiled to a golden finish, with plenty for lunch the next day.

There is a host of fresh fish dishes on the menu each day such as salmon, pan seared red snapper or sea bass, always prepared simply so you can taste the freshness of the fish. Plump shrimp saganaki is prepared with tomato sauce, herbs and feta cheese. Black linguini is topped with a savory combination of shrimp, calamari, mussels and clams in a tomato sauce flavored with ouzo, a Greek liqueur ($23). Lobster ravioli and gnocchi are other popular pasta items. Eat light with a lamb, pork, chicken, or filet mignon kebab, skewered with peppers and onions. Cowboy steak or filet mignon is cooked to order and served sizzling from the grill.

Nick’s Bistro is a great place for lunch with its wide variety of hot pressed sandwiches made with grilled chicken, grilled veggies, filet mignon, loukaniko sausage or the Cuban sandwich, made with pork loin, Swiss cheese and pickle. Burgers are made to order, served hot and juicy and are made from the best quality beef, including Kobe beef, or turkey. Pork or chicken souvlaki or gyros can be piled onto pita bread or ordered as a platter with French fries and salad, starting at just $6.

We were treated to a lovely plate of flaky baklava, sweetened with honey and walnuts. I devoured a martini glass full of thick, creamy yogurt with cherry compote and blueberries. There’s also mango sorbet, New York style cheesecake, chocolate cake and other daily treats.
