Remembering Our Veterans

Area war veterans gathered on Shore Boulevard at the Astoria Park War Memorial on November 11 at 11 a.m. for the 11th annual Veterans’ Day wreath laying. The granite monument, erected in 1926, displays the names of Queens war veterans. Bearing the inscription, “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends,” it was donated by the Long Island City Committee in honor of citizens from Western Queens who served in World War I. It has since been updated to include 200 names of residents who died in various conflicts. “In these trying times of man-made and natural disasters we must not forget those veterans who have served our country,” said Veteran Memorial Ceremony Organizer Tony Meloni. Joining him in the wreath laying were (l. to r.); Ed Babor, representing the Catholic War Veterans Post No. 1, Ricky Berrios of the Marine Corps League, a local Korean War Vet; Luke Gasparre, a World War II veteran who fought in the Battle of the Bulge and Jerry Kril, a Vietnam War veteran.
