Golden House Chinese Restaurant

Barile By Teresa

Let’s face it….there are times you don’t want to cook and don’t want to get dressed up and go out to a restaurant. When Astorians turn to take out,

Chinese food is king. And when you want Chinese food, you call Golden House Chinese Restaurant on

30th Avenue for fast, free delivery, seven days a week.

For 20 years, Golden House has been cooking up classic Szechuan, Hunan, and Cantonese cuisine for all to enjoy. The phone rings off the hook with orders to deliver and folks pop in on their way home to pick up orders to take away. They come for fresh, hot, flavorful dishes and with 172 choices, you’re sure to find your favorites here.

We started with finger-licking good, BBQ spareribs, which were meaty and succulent, available in small and large portions ($5.50 / $10.15). Next, freshly steamed vegetable dumplings came with a savory dipping sauce and with eight to an order, there’s plenty to share. You can also have dumplings filled with pork, either steamed or fried, and don’t forget to order a crunchy egg roll, filled with roasted pork or veggies. These make a great midday snack too, topped with duck sauce or hot mustard. Crispy won tons, shrimp toast or fantail shrimp are golden and crispy appetizers, or try some of their new mozzarella sticks and onion rings. There are a dozen kinds of soup, all made in house with fresh ingredients. Try the chicken and corn soup with its creamy texture or the hot and sour soup with its pungent flavor and rich brown color. Tofu and vegetable soup contains no

meat and lots of flavor, as does the seafood soup, filled with shrimp, crab and squid. Dinner entrees include over a hundred tasty options made with vegetables, fish and seafood, chicken, beef, pork, noodles, and rice. We had some sesame chicken, made with all white meat chicken breast in a delicious sauce, sprinkled with sesame seeds ($5.35). Savory sliced roast pork is sautéed with mixed vegetables for another delicious dish, spooned over white, brown, or fried rice. Moo shu pork is a popular dish that you wrap up in steamed pancakes that accompany this dish. I love noodles and Golden House serves flat noodles, spaghettilike noodles, thin noodles, and even cold sesame noodles. Lo mein resembles spaghetti and you can have it made with roast pork or chicken, beef or shrimp, vegetables only, or succulent lobster. Chow fun are flat noodles while chow mee fun are thin vermicelli prepared with either beef or pork, or you can have the house special noodles of the day.

If you want something unique and tasty, I would recommend trying the chef’s specialties, such as “Happy Family”, which marries jumbo shrimp, lobster meat, sliced pork, beef, chicken and vegetables in the house special sauce ($10.75). This large container comes to you piping hot and can be shared by two, along with some fluffy white or brown rice and fried noodles. Another creation called “Hawaii Five-O” combines beef, shrimp, scallops, chicken, and roast pork with fresh vegetables for a unique treat. Dragon Meets Phoenix” is a popular dish that combines jumbo shrimp on one side and garlic chicken with peppers, baby corn, mushrooms and broccoli on the other ($9.45). Spicy Szechuan duck is a classic dish that requires some time to prepare but is well worth the wait for its juicy, succulent

flavor and texture. If you like dishes with a spicy kick, try Curry Chicken by the pint or quart, Kung Po chicken with peanuts or Chicken with Orange, spiced up with tiny jalapeno peppers. An old standby, General Tso’s chicken, remains one of the most popular items ($5.35). Spicy Szechuan beef or beef with garlic sauce bursts with flavor, and the sauce tastes great over rice. Mild beef dishes with peppers, broccoli, mushrooms or snow peas also make for a satisfying meal and any dish can be adjusted to your liking since it’s all prepared on the spot and served piping hot. Keep it simple and order the House Combos where you choose your main dish and it comes with pork fried rice and an egg roll. Combos run from $5.75 to $7.15 and include Eggplant with garlic sauce, General Tso’s chicken, shrimp chow mein, sweet and sour chicken, and many more.

At lunchtime, try their lunch specials that run from $4.75 to $5.95 and include one of dozens of entrees, plus pork fried rice or steamed brown rice, and your choice of soup or roast pork egg roll. Golden House Chinese Restaurant is open seven days a week for lunch and dinner, from 11am to 11:30pm weekdays and until midnight on weekends. Fast, free delivery is available and you’ll get a free can of soda with orders over $10. Order over $15 and receive a free order of pork fried rice or a quart of wonton soup. You can order by phone, fax or on-line. Thank you Golden House!
