Village Grill

By Teresa Barile

Village Grill is a welcome addition to this residential section of Forest Hills, serving Greek and American sandwiches, salads, entrée platters, and more. Village Grill opened six months ago and is located in a quiet, residential neighborhood on the corner of Yellowstone

Boulevard and Ingram Street. Village Grill is already a local favorite and some of the ‘regulars’ were dining that night. Dina, the lovely owner and chef does all of the cooking and baking right on the premises and works tirelessly to offer the freshest, finest meals for her loyal patrons. This petite eatery has but 10 tidy tables and a counter for quick meals on the go.

We started with Dina’s special recipe spinach pie and cheese pie ($5.50). Both are baked in light, crispy crust and are never greasy or heavy. You can really taste the spinach and cheese along with the tender pastry. Fried meatballs are also popular for their seasonings and share-ability, with six to an order. Kids and adults love the mozzarella sticks and wing dings served with your choice of sauce for dipping. Each day homemade soups are made with kudos for the chicken avgolemono soup, made with shredded chicken, orzo, and a lemony broth. Next a generously sized Greek salad appeared with a hunk of creamy feta cheese on top, along with tomatoes, romaine, olives and red onion ($7). Wine and beer are available now to complement your meal.

Perhaps the most popular entrée on the menu is the chicken souvlaki, and with good reason. The hand-cut breast meat chicken is marinated and cooks up moist and tender, laced on skewers and served with a small Greek salad and pita, and either tzatziki sauce or Village Grill’s own special sauce. A side dish of rice, potatoes, or freshly grilled vegetables comes with it too, making this a bargain at just $10. There’s also beef or pork gyro, made by hand and Greek sausages called ‘loukaniko’ that are mildly seasoned and delicious. All of these meats can be ordered as a platter or piled into a pita sandwich for a quick, delicious lunch for less than $6. They’ll even deliver to your office.

I chatted with a lovely lady named Aliki who comes to Village Grill from Ozone Park two to three times a week for the fabulous food. Her favorite is the pork souvlaki, laced with vegetables and she said she even has a tray of them packed up to take home. She and her husband love the chicken meatballs, and everything else here, especially the Greek desserts.

Wraps are another popular lunch item and cost under $8. Try the chicken wrap filled with grilled chicken, roasted peppers, fresh mozzarella and balsamic glaze. The Mediterranean wrap features beef gyro, lettuce, tomatoes, green pepper, feta cheese, olive oil and vinegar dressing. If you prefer, stick to veggies only with grilled mushrooms, zucchini, and roasted red peppers or the Santorini fish wrap with codfish, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers and Village Grill sauce.

The glass steam table features the house made specialties of the day. On Monday you’ll find those juicy chicken meatballs. Tuesday features seasonal dishes and Wednesday offers Dina’s delicious vegetable pastitsio, a real treat made with pasta, vegetables and a light béchamel topping. Visit Thursday for grilled chicken Marsala; Friday for sautéed flounder and Saturday for traditional meat pastitsio. Sundays are for the special moussaka and this is one of the best around.

For dessert, try the house made ‘ekmek’ prepared with a light, creamy custard, scented with cinnamon on a crust of shredded phyllo dough. The baklava is fantastic here, rich with chopped walnuts and a touch of honey. Again, even the desserts are not heavy or overwhelming. Galaktoboureko is another Greek pastry and you can see all of them in the sparkling case, along with NY style cheesecake. The coffee is delicious too and you can always come in just for coffee and dessert and take a break from your day.

Stop in for lunch or dinner, seven days a week, from 11:30am to 10pm (11pm on Saturdays). Dina will cater your next event to your home or office and free delivery is available. You’ll want to come with a big appetite but you won’t need a lot of money when you dine at Village Grill. Welcome to the neighborhood!
