Infant Abandoned In Woodside
The Woodside Houses was the scene where an infant, only a few hours old, was discovered. Police are looking for the parents of a newborn girl who was found abandoned on August 19 at the Woodside Houses.
Officers found the baby, only a few hours old, wrapped in towels and sheets behind a building near Broadway and 51st Street in Woodside.
The child was taken to Elmhurst Hospital Center and appears to be in good health.
The state’s Safe Haven law allows a person to abandon a newborn at a safe place like a hospital or police station without fear of prosecution.
“There is no need for someone who may be desperate, in despair, or in crisis to abandon their newborn child to the elements. The Safe Haven program allows anyone to surrender their infant to a healthy and safe environment where the baby can be left by the mother if she has to do so. Under the Safe Haven Program, a person can surrender their infant to a safe place, such as a hospital, police station or firehouse without fear of prosecution,” Queens Borough President Helen Marshall said.
