Officials Warn Queens Residents: Beware ‘Clunker Scam’
Law enforcement sources are warning the public to beware a scam that could turn the government’s former “Cash For Clunkers” auto rebate program into a car-owner’s worst nightmare.
The government program offered car buyers up to $4,500 if they trade in their used gas-guzzlers for new, “green” vehicles at authorized car dealerships.
Sources said operators of several Web sites have been contacting owners of the gas-guzzlers, promising them a reservation in the program. All the scammers need to reserve the spot is the owner’s name, address and social security number.
“Hang up, walk away from the phone and forget about it,” law enforcement sources said. “There is no such thing as a reserved spot in the government program. Do not ever give your personal information to anyone making an offer on a Web site, on the phone or in person. If the request is legitimate, there will be legitimate paperwork to back it up.”
