Waterfront Concerts In Astoria Park Continue



The Central Astoria Waterfront Concert Series continues on Thursdays at 7:30 p.m. on the Astoria Park Lawn. On July 12, the Swingtime Big Band will perform “Swingin’ the Classics”. Fresh from their fifth appearance at Lincoln Center’s Midsummer Night Swing, Long Island’s premier swing era band, led by Steve Shaiman, salutes the big band tradition of taking well-known classical and folk melodies and turning them into swing hits. This program features music from the libraries of such stellar bands as Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington, Tommy Dorsey and Count Basie, plus a special 100th Birthday Tribute to Les Brown and his Band of Renown. On July 19, Whitley and the Hard Times Band perform the Forever Ray Show which features the exciting and uplifting music of Ray Charles. The music of Ray Charles, (known as “The Genius”) includes a blend of musical styles which range from jazz and blues, to country and R&B. The band features a stellar line-up of musicians whose performing credits include vocalist Angela Workman who was a Raelette in Ray Charles’ band. Members of the band have recorded or performed with Alicia Keys, Rod Stewart, Levon Helm, the Temptations and Christina Aguilera to name a few. Bring a blanket or a chair and enjoy these great sounds on the Astoria Park waterfront.
