On July 4, from 5 until 10 p.m., there will be a Barbecue Block Party on 23rd Street and Hoyt Avenue in Astoria. For the past three years, it has been planned by Hanssel Mattai, a resident of the neighborhood for more than 30 years, in order to bring awareness to crime prevention and encourage communal feelings in the neighborhood. The event has tripled in size every year, with more than 500 guests getting acquainted with their neighbors last year.
