A Super Bowl Dream Come True

or Astoria residents Donald Del Giorno and his friend John Manchesi it was a football miracle.

Del Giorno was the lucky winner of Z100’s Super Bowl XXI giveaway, which awarded him a pair of tickets to watch the N.Y. Giants play the Denver Broncos in Pasadena, California.

“Winning the tickets and the weekend was a dream come true,” he told the Gazette in the Jan. 28, 1987 issue. “It was like fate…incredible for something like this to happen…and that’s what I kept telling Scott Shannon when he called to tell me I was the winner.”

Del Giorno was referring, of course, to famous Z100 DJ Shannon who began the contest two weeks prior to the game offering a Giants jersey to whoever guessed the name of a song played earlier that day on the station.

Del Giorno called in with the right answer and was entered into the final drawing. The winner received a four-day package worth $5,000 including the pair of tickets.

And the rest is history. Including the game in which the Giants beat the Broncos 39-20.

This year, Astoria residents like Del Giorno, relived that amazing adventure from more than two decades ago, when the Giants returned the Vince Lombardi trophy to New York after beating the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI by a score of 21-17.
