Astoria Park Summer Festivals Enjoyed By All

undreds came to the annual Riverfront Festival in the late summer of 1986 held in Astoria Park.

Organized by the West Astoria Community Development Corporation and its President Bill Sweeney, the day of music, culture, food and the arts took place on September 14 and was reported in the Sept. 17 issue of the Gazette. The event featured Jazzercise, members of the Astoria Dance Studio, Nazita Sahara Dancers, juggler Elliott Niles, Yugoslavian Folk Dancers, a martial arts demonstration by the Miyazaki Karate Institute and a performance by the Gene Moffit Singers. Officers of the 114th Precinct and representatives of the School Program to Educate and Control Drug Abuse (SPECDA) were present and Shie Jie Enterprises was also on hand with models and drawings of Riverview Chateau, a proposed luxury condominium built on vacant land across from the Sohmer Piano factory on 21st Street in Long Island City.

Today, Astoria Park is the site of summertime events such as the annual Waterfront Concert Series and the July 4 fireworks show provided by the Grucci family. Produced by the Central Astoria Local Development Coalition, the summer long music festival has featured old favorites: the Infernos, Nashville Attitude, the Manhattan Skyline, Astoria Symphony Orchestra, George Gee Swing Orchestra and Joey Dee and the Starliters.
