MANOR OKTOBERFEST

Make dad to Manor Oktoberfest for Father’s Day, which is this coming Sunday, for generous portions of steaks, ribs, roasted pork and German specialties. The family atmosphere is perfect for a convivial repast and the menu offers something for everyone and far beyond what you’d expect from a restaurant with “Oktoberfest” in its name. In fact, it is a comfortable, neighborhood restaurant, bar and caterer located on Yellowstone Blvd, between Queens Blvd. and Woodhaven Blvd. Warm, exposed brick, wooden booths, earthy colors and soft lighting make the spacious dining room very pleasant, with plenty of room for a family gathering.

Owner Mark Gallagher has about 30 years of experience in the business of making and serving delicious food with the famed Manor Deli in the Atlas Park Shopping Center. Gallagher takes pride in preparing many of the dishes here, including pounding the schnitzel perfectly evenly so that they fry up crisp and golden. Daughter Stephanie helps out in the dining room and George, the friendly server, offers helpful suggestions for drink and dinner choices, if you’re undecided among all the tantalizing options.

Let your day slip away with a hand-shaken cocktail, such as the ‘cherry blossom’ martini made with Stoli vanilla, grenadine and orange juice. The ‘red baron’ is also popular, or try your favorite mixed drink. Of course, an extensive list of beers is available, including Duvel from Belgium, Weiss bier from Germany and Smithwick’s from Ireland. A seasonal beer was available called Hofbrau Maibock, available only in May, and in short supply. We were fortunate to have come at the right time to try this flavorful beer with an extra kick, served in a litersized glass mug. More than a dozen bottled beers will make the beer aficionado happy.

Manor Oktoberfest makes all their dishes from scratch using the best ingredients. Everything is nicely presented and served piping hot. Appetizers run from $7- $10 and include moist, flavorful crab cakes with homemade tartar sauce, and crunchy coconut shrimp, served with sweet and sour dipping sauce. A house specialty that you won’t find anywhere else is called BBQ pork wings. Indeed pork doesn’t have wings but these delicate mini pork chops fall right off the bone, doused in house made barbecue sauce that is out of this world. The night we visited, a Korean version of these succulent ribs was featured as a special and the special Asian style sauce made them finger licking good. My dining companion dove into a decadent plate of smoked Black Forest bacon, along with some crunchy potato pancakes. The kids will love the hand sliced chicken fingers and the bar crowd loves the hot wings. If you can’t decide, simply order the Super Sampler for a generous helping of pierogies, potato pancakes, hot wings, onion rings and mozzarella sticks.

The chefs at Manor Oktoberfest put their heart and soul into every dish served. For traditional German fare, try the “best of the wurst”, featuring your choice of bratwurst, chicken bratwurst, knockwurst, kielbasa or giant frankfurter on a toasted club roll with their fabulous potato salad. Indeed one of these hefty wurst sandwiches makes an excellent lunch and at only $6, it’s cheaper than fast food! These juicy wursts can also be ordered as main courses, where you can pair up different kinds, or have a wurst and smoked pork chop combination. I had to try their classic schnitzel, made from tender pork cutlets pounded thin, breaded and fried until golden brown. A squeeze of lemon was all this savory cutlet needed. Jaegerschnitzel adds a topping of creamy mushroom sauce to this hearty meal, available as a platter or in a sandwich, served with home fried potatoes and red cabbage. Traditional sauerbraten is made from beef that is roasted in a sweet and sour sauce, sliced thin and served over a bed of spaetzle, which are handmade German dumplings and a side of pickled red cabbage ($23). Smoked loin pork chops called kassler rippchen are very popular among the regular crowd for their tenderness and smoky flavor. You can “Oktoberize” any dish by adding their Black Forest bacon, sautéed onions and mushrooms to it.

Simple meat and potatoes folks will love the ribeye steak cooked to order, full and half racks of juicy barbecued pork ribs, or a combo of pulled pork and a half rack of ribs. All these dishes come with vegetables and your choice of roasted or mashed potatoes. If that doesn’t say “Happy Father’s Day”, I don’t know what does. Oh, and Oktoberfest kids eat for just $7.50 from the kids’ menu. Hot and cold sides include their fabulous potato salad, cucumber salad, pickles, red cabbage, sauerkraut, creamed spinach and more.

Manor Oktoberfest offers a special, low priced lunch menu that includes juicy grilled burgers, bratwurst sandwiches, BBQ pulled pork, grilled chicken and more. An Oktoberfest meal isn’t complete without a slice of house made apple strudel and vanilla ice cream, or a hunk of red velvet cake, Bailey’s cheesecake, chocolate mud slide cake or raspberry almond cake with marzipan.
