Chian To Celebrate Centennial of Chios’ Liberation
The Chian Federation is organizing a series of events for the centennial of Chios’ liberation. The celebrations will commence with the Kanaria event, and conclude with the presentation of the 33rd Annual Homeric Award.
The Kanaria event, which will take place on June 17, is dedicated to the memory of Admiral Konstantinos Kanaris; the hero of the Greek War of Independence, who through his courage and bravery revived the Greek revolution. The Metropolitan of Chios, Psara and Oinousses, Markos will officiate the Divine Liturgy at 9 a.m. at Saint Demetrios Cathedral, 30-11 30th Dr., Astoria, followed by a reception at 12:15 p.m. in honor of Metropolitan Markos at the Cultural Center of the Chian Federation, 44-01 Broadway, Astoria, to be followed by a cultural event at 1:30 p.m. Admission is free.
The Centennial Eleftheria event will take place on November 11, with a Divine Liturgy at Holy Trinity Cathedral, 319 East 74th St., Manhattan, officiated by His Eminence Archibishop Demetrios. A Cultural Event celebrating 100 years of liberation will follow at the Cultural Center of the Chian Federation.
Among the cultural programs and events the Chian Federation is organizing the Centennial National Essay Contest, in which high school, undergraduate and graduate students may participate from anywhere in the United States. The first place prizes will be awarded on November 11, at the Eleftheria Cultural Event and the winning essays will be published in the commemorative Thirty-Third Homeric Award journal.
On the Centennial Anniversary of the Liberation of Chios, the Chian Federation will publish the book Chios 1822 — 1912: From Massacre to Liberation, containing newspaper and magazine articles and book chapters dealing with a period of Chian history which has not been well documented in the historical literature of Chios especially in the English language. All proceeds from the sale of the book will benefit the Chian Geriatric Foundation and the Chian Federation Scholarship Fund.
