Mayor Michael Bloomber and Queens Borough President Helen Marshall flank John Smith, a decorated Whitestone resident who was this year's grand marshall at the Whitestone Memorial Day parade last Monday.  The World War II and Korean War veteran entered the army in 1941 as a private, and became a rifleman in the pacific.
