St. Demetrios Holds Annual Greek Festival
The Greek community of Astoria rejoiced last week as it celebrated the 38th annual Greek Festival to benefit St. Demetrios Cathedral. Persons of Hellenic and non-Hellenic descent partook in delicious homemade Greek cuisine including souvlaki (kebab), spanikopita (spinach pie), tiropita (cheese pie), gyros and loukoumades which are small fried zeppolis covered in honey and brown sugar. Students of St. Demetrios, 30- 11 30th Dr. in Astoria, participated in Greek folk dancing and enjoyed amusement of the Ferris wheel, an inflatable fun house, ring and basketball toss. There were games and rides for children and young adults, a flea market, raffles and church tours. The festivities were held from May 17 through 20. Hundreds of people attended daily to join in the festive celebration of Astoria’s Greek heritage.
