Simotas Celebrates Black History Month At P.S. 127
On May 14, Assemblymember Aravella Simotas honored seventh grade students who participated in her annual Black History Month essay contest at P.S. 127 in East Elmhurst. Simotas spoke to students at the school, named the Aerospace and Science Academy, about the importance of remembering the contributions of African Americans throughout our nation’s history. “The students exhibited a deep understanding of the importance of black history in America, from the abolition of slavery to the civil rights movement to popular culture and music,” said Simotas. “It is necessary for us to lead our students into the future educated by the past.” The assemblymember applauded the students for their talent and the educational content of their essays, which covered diverse subjects ranging from Harriet Tubman to Jimmy Hendrix. “Your essays were remarkable because of your insight and your writing ability,” Simotas said. “I congratulate each of you and your teacher, Ms. Willis, for a job well done.”
