Gianaris Honors Lewandowski

State Senator Michael Gianaris honored Sheila Lewandowski of Long Island City’s The Chocolate Factory Theater as part of the state senate’s 15th annual Women of Distinction celebration on May 15 in Albany. Lewandowski was recognized for her ongoing dedication to local businesses, community improvement and the development of the arts in Long Island City. “I commend Sheila Lewandowski for her distinguished service to our community and am honored to induct her into this year’s group of Women of Distinction,” Gianaris said. “Not only is Sheila an asset to our neighborhood but she is also a friend, and it is a pleasure to have the opportunity to recognize her tremendous contributions to Western Queens and her achievements with The Chocolate Factory.” Lewandowski is co-founder and executive director of The Chocolate Factory Theater, an experimental performance incubator where she has supported the work of hundreds of artists since the theater’s opening in 2004. Among her many accomplishments, she previously served as the first managing director of Queens Council on the Arts and as associate director of the Girls’ Vacation Fund. She also organizes Taste of LIC, an annual food festival that brings together local eateries to share their specialties with the community while raising money for The Chocolate Factory.
