Cops Put Brakes On Drag Racers
Police in Elmhurst and Maspeth last week slammed the brakes on local dragsters, arresting six drivers on a variety of charges including DWI and driving with a suspended license.
The April 28 crackdowns were conducted by cops at the 104th and 108th Precincts at two known drag racing locations, Maurice Avenue near the Long Island Expressway and 51st Avenue near Queens Boulevard, police said.
Cops arrested two drag racers for driving with forged vehicle documents, two for driving while intoxicated and two for driving with a suspended license.
The cops also issued one Criminal Court summons, 13 summonses for moving violations, 10 parking violations and seized five vehicles, police said.
Police targeted locations with a history of drag racing activity to send a message to drivers, a police spokesperson said.
“We wanted to let these people know that they are always on our radar, even when they think we’ve given up on a location,” the spokesperson said. “It’s an uphill battle.”
“Drag racing is not only annoying—it kills people,” a police source said.
Police are urging residents and homeowners to call 911 to report drag racing activity in their neighborhoods.
