Race Held In Support Of Cancer Treatment And Cure
This special event was held in honor of the senator in order to help raise funds to aid SHAREing & CAREing’s mission to help provide support and bring public awareness about one of the leading causes of death to women including breast and ovarian cancers.
The event, organized by SHAREing & CAREing board member Tom Nowierski, featured races, both by runners and horses, with more than 160 people in attendance.
Onorato in his address said that he was very proud of the program and the success that SHAREing & CAREing has had over the years as a cancer support group.
The senator’s wife, Athena, was honored for her support of SHAREing & CAREing.
After the two races concluded, the normal horse racing at Aqueduct resumed. The second horse race of the day was known as the Senator George Onorato/SHAREing & CAREing Horse Race. The senator himself and members of SHAREing & CAREing including Treasurer Mary Demakos, Vice President Carolyn Scarano and President Anna Kril, gathered in the winner’s circle to award jockey, Christopher DeCarlo, who rode the winning horse, “Sing Like a Bird”, with a special plaque.
Also in attendance were state Senator Michael Gianaris and Assemblymember Aravella Simotas.
A check for $2,500 was presented to SHAREing & CAREing by the Onoratos.
Since its founding in 1994, SHAREing & CAREing, as an advocate for breast and ovarian cancer patients and their families, has sought to improve medical services to women throughout the five boroughs through early detection, treatment and information about living with the effects of breast cancer, regardless of economic stratum. SHAREing & CAREing helps people from high school age to senior citizens through activities that include individual advocacy and case management, referrals, essential services, support groups, educational forums, stress reduction workshops and pharmaceutical assistance.
