Forest Hills Teenager Is Councilmember For A Day
Michelle Coleman, 16, of Forest Hills, enjoyed the experience of serving as the 29th District Councilmember for a Day. As part of Women’s History Month, members of the New York City Council’s Women’s Caucus each brought in their councilmember for the day. Coleman, an intern in Councilmember Karen Koslowitz’s office, is currently a junior at St. Agnes Academic H.S. in College Point. She is very active in her school community, and is a member of the National Honor Society, Math and Science Honor Societies, Student Council, the Science Research program, and the cross country team. She is a math tutor at St. Fidelis School, as well as at St. Agnes. Coleman will be graduating in June 2013 and plans on attending Queens College, majoring in education and political science. Accompanying Koslowitz to City Hall, Coleman introduced legislation during the stated meeting that would require the Department of Transportation to be more transparent in notifying any changes to local community boards and councilmembers. “Thanks to this empowering experience, I was able to learn much more about local government. I conversed with my fellow councilmembers for a day and even spoke at a City Hall meeting,” said Coleman, “If that’s not a unique experience, I don’t know what is!”
