Han Hangs On

By Evan Kaston

Last week on the hit Fox television show, American Idol, they narrowed it down to the top 13 contestants. Also last week, we at the Gazette published a piece on a Heejun Han, the Korean-American Idol contestant who’s showing all of us exactly how it’s supposed to be done. This portion of American Idol leaves the people to decide who will be going on to the next round by casting their votes via phone,  text message or online. Each week, one contestant will be eliminated but all is well for our hometown hero because it doesn’t look like he’ll be going home any time soon.

Han, along with Jessica Sanchez, Hollie Cavanagh, Colton Dixon, Skylar Laine, Phillip Phillips, and Deandre Brackensick received the highest amount of votes out of the thirteen contestants and Ryan Seacrest, the show’s host, informed all of them that they could breathe easy for another week because they were safe from elimination. This was not the case for the 19-year-old from Valrico, Florida, Jeremy Rosado, who was chosen as a wild card by the judges last week but eliminated this week.

Han continues to blow the judges away with his performances and find his way into the hearts of American Idol fans across the nation, especially here in his hometown of Flushing. Each of the single elimination rounds that will follow, including this week, will be assigned a theme that the singers must follow; this week called for a Stevie Wonder and Whitney Houston theme. All the male contestants sang their favorite Wonder song and all the female contestants sang their favorite Houston song. Han chose the classic, “All In Love Is Fair” and the judges sent nothing but good comments his way.

Next Wednesday, Han will battle it out with the rest of the Idol singers to stay alive and move on to the next round. The decisions will be announced the next day, after the singers continue to wow the viewers and judges. Keep your fingers crossed for Heejun Han and if you’re an Idol fan, continue voting to help push him to the next round and then eventually to be our next American Idol!
