The Lexington Cheerleaders cheer their way to the top and reclaim the championship title at the ESDAA Division 1 Tournament. The Lexington School for the Deaf H.S. Cheerleading team definitely had something to shout about this year as they reclaimed the championship title at the Eastern Schools for the Deaf Athletic Association Tournament on February 11. Lexington competed against five other deaf teams at The Learning Center in Framingham, Massachusetts, and emerged the victors. Team members Kathy Nieves and Isatou Sankanu brought the winners additional glory at being named to the All Tournament Cheerleading Squad.

“The boys and girls worked extremely hard this season. They practiced almost every day after school and on Saturdays in the weeks leading up to the competition to perform at a championship level,” said Coach Maria Micioni. “The highlight of the cheerleading competition is the team dance. It’s just like something you would see on ESPN with stunts, lifts and flying cheerleaders. They were awesome.”

Lexington Athletic Director Bob Sheiner said “I am very proud of our team this year. Our coach has a no cut policy. Many of those who join have little or no cheerleading experience. They remain on the team as long as they pass their classes and follow team rules. The team came a long way and overcame many challenges this year, so winning the championship is especially gratifying.”

Members of the 2011- 2012 Lexington Cheerleading team include Jasmine Archer, Guillermo Burgos, Nicole Ceron, Marie Beth Donegan, Fred Fowler, Chelsea Hilaire, Khadijah Jackson, Chen Liu, Shakema Nanco, Kathy Nieves, Victoria Pon, Kimkisha Roberts, Evelio Rodriguez, Isatou Sankanu, Wyona Singh, and Nayyar Zia.

The team is led by Micioni and Assistant Coach Tara Ciccione.
