Holy Cross H.S. Installs New President

Father  Walter E. Jenkins C.S.C. was installed as the new president of Holy Cross H.S. (HCHS) on September 15, during the school’s opening liturgy. The ceremony was attended by more than 1,000 people, including Brooklyn Diocese Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio, who led the mass.  Also in attendance were some 25 concelebrants from parishes throughout Queens, HCHS board members, students, faculty, staff, alumni, and honored guests.
Following the Mass, Congregation of Holy Cross Moreau Province Provincial Superior Brother William Zaydak C.S.C. officially commissioned Jenkins as president.
“The president must be able to identify and respond to the needs of this community in the present and anticipate the future, and we believe you have the qualities to do that,” Zaydak said. “As faith leader of this institution, we are entrusting to you the hearts and minds of these students.”
Jenkins is a member of the congregation of Holy Cross, United States Province of Priests and Brothers, and brings to his new post years of experience in educational administration. Prior to this appointment, Jenkins served as director of Campus Ministry at Stonehill College, located in North Easton, MA, and earlier, as principal of Bishop Hoban H.S., based in Wilkes-Barre, PA. Jenkins, now the third president of Holy Cross, succeeds Brother LaMendola, who held the position for 14 years, and William D. Damato, who was president from 1989 to 1996.
