Verizon Hero Snares Sneaker Thief
A worker picketing outside a Steinway Street Verizon Wireless Store nabbed an accused shoplifter on August 11.
Cops said the worker spotted Martha Toro, 42, clutching a bag as she bolted down Steinway Street on Thursday afternoon.
The worker, John Smith, grabbed Toro and held her until cops from the 114th Precinct arrived, police said.
Toro had allegedly stashed five pairs of sneakers worth $225 into her purse and bolted from a Sketchers store located one half-block from the Verizon store, police said.
A female worker at Sketchers spotted Toro with the stolen goods as she casually walked past registers and out the door. The woman took off after Toro, shouting for help from shoppers on Steinway Street—and that help came from Smith, a 30-year Verizon employee, who was outside on strike, police said.
“I’m lucky the strikers were out there today,” Sketchers Manager Yessica Chavez said.
Toro was charged with robbery and criminal possession of stolen property at her arraignment at Queens Criminal Court.
