CANZaCity ROADHOUSE

CANZacity Roadhouse opened just over a year ago to the delight of local Astorians who can be seen relaxing at tables outside and inside this friendly establishment. CANZacity Roadhouse was the brainchild of two Long Island boys, Tim Lorito and Matt Dill who are proud to have opened three locations so far in Westbury, Astoria, and the latest in Patchogue. Their fourth CANZ is scheduled to open in Manhattan this fall. The secret to their success lies in an astounding 250 beers on tap and in canz only, with brews from all corners of the world and for every taste. They mix up fabulous cocktails, served by very attractive, friendly waitresses, and the food takes “pub food” to new, delicious heights. Happy Hour specials, weekly Karaoke, sports events and low prices make CANZacity Roadhouse a great place to relax with friends.

Start with any one of those frosty cold beers and sit on the back patio, with its retractable rooftop, or find a table anywhere you like in this rough-hewn roadhouse. Beers from Brooklyn to Belgium to Australia are available, with some coming from as far away as Sri Lanka and Rochester! You’re sure to find one that suits your beer-loving palate. You must try one of their legendary cocktails, available for groups and served in a half-gallon sized fishbowl with straws for everyone. One of the most popular is the Original CANZacity Jungle Juice, made with Absolut vodka, citron, grenadine, peach schnapps, orange and pineapple juices for a fruity drink with a punch. Fortunately, this cocktail is also available by the glass. The Red Bull Rocket will keep you going all night with that magic elixir, vodka, lime juice and cranberry juice.

You’ll be surprised by the quality and variety of the food. We started with a sampling of appetizers, thanks to the helpful suggestion of our lovely server, Kristin. Like any self-respecting sports bar, the Buffalo chicken wings are excellent, not greasy and served with your choice of hot sauce that is mild, medium or hot, or choose honey BBQ or teriyaki. Buffalo bites are boneless chunks of chicken with the same choice of sauces, and we loved the honey barbecue. Quesadillas were crisp and light and grilled to crispy perfection, filled with either chicken, shrimp or beef and zesty jack cheese, pico de gallo and sour cream ($3-$5). “Loaded” fries are hand cut French fries with cheddar and jack cheeses, bits of crispy bacon and ranch dressing. Everyone loves the crispy, fried calamari and CANZ potato skins. Naturally, all appetizers offer plenty to share and patrons can enjoy “Wing Fever” on Monday nights, when wings cost 30 cents each and draft beer costs $3 from 7-11pm.

Order a generously sized, crunchy Cobb salad, Caesar or CANZ salad and top it with grilled chicken, shrimp, salmon or steak for a great lunch or dinner. CANZacity’s sandwiches are two-handed affairs and can be enjoyed for lunch, dinner or late night meal. Tender, grilled, marinated skirt steak is piled onto ciabatta bread and served with wild mushrooms, grilled vegetables, thin, crispy onion rings and potato skins filled with real cheddar cheese and bacon ($14.95). My favorite sandwich is the pulled pork loaded with tender, sweet barbecued pork, shredded so that it melts in your mouth ($12.95). The grilled chicken sandwich has been marinated first then served on garlic bread with fresh mozzarella, roasted peppers and lemon-garlic dressing ($10.95). The classic grilled cheese sandwich reaches new heights when prepared on toasted brioche with bacon and few can resist the roast beef dip with melted mozzarella, dipped in au jus. All these hearty sandwiches are served with regular French fries or incredibly delicious (and healthier) sweet potato waffle fries for a $1.50 more.

The Fisherman’s platter is prepared with beerbattered shrimp and scallops served with house made tartar sauce. A popular entrĂ©e is the Jack Daniels BBQ salmon, served with grilled onions, mushrooms, a vegetable medley and garlic mashed potatoes ($12.95).

If you just crave a burger, CANZ makes four delicious types, all with your favorite toppings. If you like smaller versions of burgers, then order the mini sliders, made with juicy Kobe beef, pulled pork or grilled chicken. My companion and I devoured their fantastic wraps, made especially tasty because they’re grilled on the outside to make the tortilla crispy and more flavorful. One was filled with vibrant, grilled summer vegetables, fresh mozzarella and balsamic vinaigrette, while the other one we tried was filled with grilled chicken chopped bacon, cheddar, lettuce and tomato. We vowed to come back for more of these wraps.

End your meal with a brownie sundae, Belgian waffles and ice cream, decadent fried Oreos, Twinkies or CANZ ice cream cake.

Watch your favorite baseball games all summer and get ready for Football on Sundays in September. With 30 screens, everyone has the perfect view. Enjoy two-fers Monday to Friday from 11:30am to 4:30pm, Monday night Wing Fever and Karaoke on Tuesday nights starting at 10pm.

For an incredible selection of beer, cocktails and really fine food, served in a friendly neighborhood spot with great service, visit CANZaCity Roadhouse and bring a couple of friends. CANZaCity ROADHOUSE
