Lexington School For The Deaf Recognizes Local Companies
High school seniors from Lexington School for the Deaf hosted an Employer Appreciation Day luncheon on June 10 to thank several area companies and organizations for giving internship opportunities, which afforded the students the chance to gain an insight into the workforce. The interning students worked at a number of jobs in retail, hospitality, government, education, health care and other industries and learned about various careers and the responsibilities that go along with holding a job. Lexington’s internship program, now in its 34th year, also allows students to look at potential career paths after they finish their education.
“Our students participating in the internship program are able to learn what it is to work, what it is to arrive on time and what it is to deal with coworkers,” Supervisor of Career Education and Guidance Department at the Lexington School for the Deaf Tony Massa said. “The program also acts as a learning experience for employers as they learn to accept and take advantage [of] the students’ abilities instead of focusing on their disabilities.”
Thirty-two students participated in this year’s program.
Lexington student Angel Ortiz thanked the internship program for helping him decide what career to pursue. Having worked alongside Patrick Kehoe, a physical education teacher at Queens High School of Teaching, Ortiz says, “It was tough to communicate with them, but still I rolled up my sleeves and got into it and it has helped me decide that I’d like to become a phys ed teacher.”
The students relayed their positive experiences with their internships and the staff presented the employers with a certificate of recognition and a commemorative pen on behalf of Lexington. The luncheon was catered by Gotte’s Café of Jackson Heights, which also participates in Lexington’s internship program.
