Stop & Shop Provides Emergency Assistance To Kosher Food Pantry
Forest Hills Stop & Shop Manager Tammie Smith, Queens Borough President Helen Marshall, Councilmember Elizabeth Crowley, Queens Jewish Community Council (QJCC) Executive Director Cynthia Zalisky and representing the Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty, Ilene Marcus, announced that Stop & Shop is donating one thousand pounds of Kosher for Passover food to the QJCC food pantry to help them meet the increasing number of requests for emergency assistance.
According QJCC President Warren Hecht, in February of 2009 the QJCC Kosher food pantry served 930 in need. The number doubled to 1,818 in February of 2010 and increased by 325 percent this February when they provided emergency assistance to 2,240 people.
An estimated 20 percent of the city’s Jewish families live in impoverished conditions and according to the Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty, 23 percent of the Jewish children who reside in New York City live at or under the poverty level.
