Weiner, Ferreras Call On City To Sell Sexist Statue
Congressmember Anthony Weiner (D-Forest Hills), Women’s Issues Committee Chair and Councilmember Julissa Ferreras (D-East Elmhurst) and representatives from local women’s organizations called on the city to get rid of the statue near Queens Borough Hall, called Triumph of Civic Virtue, which depicts a nude man standing atop two women, and sell it on Craigslist to raise funds, rather than spend thousands to renovate it, as they feel the statue is sexist and has no place in public. The artist had stated that he used the male form to symbolize strength and the female form of sirens to symbolize temptation that can turn treacherous. Sculpted by Frederick MacMonnies, the statue has been the source of controversy in the Kew Gardens community since 1941, when then Mayor [Fiorello] LaGuardia moved the offensive figure out of City Hall Park to the current Kew Gardens location.
