Sunnyside Community Services Receives Grant From BJ’s

Sunnyside Community Services (SCS) recently received a grant from BJ’s Charitable Foundation in the amount of $5,000 to help fund Sunday meals at their Center for Active Older Adults.
“This grant will help us fight hunger and isolation among seniors in our community,” SCS Executive Director Judith Zangwill said. “Our ability to offer a Sunday meal is vitally important because it provides the opportunity for seniors to access a hot, nutritious meal while they connect with friends and engage in activities at our beautiful Center.”
BJ’s Charitable Foundation has donated $591,600 to organizations that focus on providing services in the form of hunger prevention, self-sufficiency, health care or education to those in need that reside in the communities BJ’s serves. “Not only is BJ’s Wholesale Club extremely proud to serve our members, the company believes it’s equally important to support the communities in which we have clubs,” BJ’s Wholesale Club Manager of Community Relations Jessica Newman said in a recent statement. “BJ’s Charitable Foundation will continue to put a strong emphasis on giving back to local communities that support basic needs.”
SCS’ Center for Active Older Adults serves over 4,000 members, almost half of whom have annual incomes under $10,400 per year.  In addition to offering nutritious meals from Monday through Friday, the Center provides benefit and support screenings, workshops, computer classes, and dozens of activities a week, from art to yoga, for individuals aged 60 or more.
SCS has been providing Sunday meals with the support of a grant from Feeding America. According to Zangwill, the grant from BJ’s Foundation will support SCS in providing an additional meal each month, helping to alleviate hunger for those members experiencing the most severe financial need. “The support of BJ’s Charitable Foundation means so much to me and the community we serve,” Zangwill said.  “Their assistance is appreciated so very much, especially by the people whose lives are made better through this generous gift.”
