Greek American Homeowners Association President George Alexiou (second from r.) and his wife Elpida were joined by American and Australian travelers while on vacation in Antarctica. Greek American Homeowners Association President George Alexiou and his wife Elpida left on December 15 for a two-week tour of Patagonia culminating at King George Island in Antarctica. They traveled by jet, ship and a small eight-passenger plane. They visited Santiago and Punto Arena in Chile, Ushuaia and El Calafate in Argentina and cruised through the Strait of Magellan and Cape Horn. It is now summer in the southern hemisphere, which means high temperatures of 30 degrees for Antarctica, but with winds reaching 80 miles per hour temperatures can dip to negative 30 degrees. A big change when compared to the 75 degrees in Santiago. While in Antarctica, Alexiou observed sea lions, elephant seals and penguins. Alexiou is a seasoned traveler, having made trips to the North Pole, China, Uruguay, Argentina and Brazil. –Annette Hanze Alberts
