Queens Residents Among Police Academy Graduates

Residents of Astoria, Elmhurst and Forest Hills were among the graduates. After completing more than six months of intensive training at the Police Academy, the new police officers have been assigned to Operation Impact, a program that pairs rookie officers with experienced supervisors and deploys them to targeted high-crime areas.

The rookies speak 47 different languages and come from 51 different countries; some served in the U.S. military. During the proceedings, present service members and veterans stood as the band played the official song for each branch of the armed services. Among the veterans who rose to their feet at the strains of the Marine Corps Hymn was New York Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly, who served in Vietnam
