City Councilmember Peter Vallone Jr. said he plans to introduce a street co-naming proposal at that location in her memory and Community Board 1 unanimously voted its approval, at the request of Vallone, at its November 16 meeting.

Buehler passed away on October 8 at age 94 and was lifelong community activist and long-time supporter of the Variety Boys and Girls Club. “[She played a] very, very important role in the community,” Community Board 1 District Manager Lucille Hartmann said. “Ann was very involved and was executive director of Variety Boys and Girls Club for approximately twenty years.”

Vallone, in an October 26 letter to CB 1, said the street co-naming would be considered as soon as possible once the board voted.

In other business, an application to continue the development of a six story mixeduse building in a R6B zone, formerly zoned R6 at 35-16 Astoria Blvd., Astoria was denied. The building permit for the project, an ambulatory diagnostic center on the ground floor with residential units above, automatically lapsed upon rezoning from R6 to R6B on May 25, 2010, before the required foundations could be completed.

An application to re-open and amend a Board of Standards and Appeals (BSA) resolution granted on October 1, 1991 to extend the term of a variance that expired on October 1, 2010 was approved for a gasoline service station with accessory uses located at 43-03 Astoria Blvd. in Astoria.

A renewal of a license to operate an enclosed sidewalk café at 40-19 Bway., in Astoria for 10 tables and 36 seats at Pollos Mario was also approved.

At the October 19 meeting, CB 1 approved an application by the Department of Citywide Administration Services and the NYC Economic Development Corporation for the demapping of 36th Street between 34th and 35th Avenues to allow Kaufman Astoria Studios to create a studio lot.

The board’s approval came with the following stipulations. First, community amenities like street trees, lights, etc. be presented to the community. Second, outreach programs should increase, including community hiring and, third, parking on all the adjoining streets around the studio should not be restricted to Kaufman Astoria Studios and all Kaufman Astoria employees must park on Kaufman Astoria property. Fourth, additional crossing guards be provided at the five schools nearby to be paid for by the city or Kaufman Astoria Studios. Finally, the rear gate be pushed back as was done with the front gate and the sign be repositioned.

The Greek-American Homeowners Association will hold their 21st annual Thanksgiving Lunch on November 25 from 12 p.m to 4 p.m. at 23-49 31st St. Astoria across from P.S. 85, featuring food, drink and music. Everything will be provided for free. For more information, call 718-545- 4046.
