I’m happy to write about Natural Market, which has been my “go to” market on the way home from work for the past three years, when it first opened on Broadway and 46th Street in Astoria. Natural Market features an incredible variety of organic foods including sandwiches, soups, salads, fruit, vegetables, juices, groceries and so much more. As a frequent customer, I’m amazed at how much the Natural Market has to offer this neighborhood in a compact, friendly shop and eatery. Owner John Sierros built his business in response to a need in the neighborhood for fresh, organic and natural foods, juices and household products for everyone in the family, even your pets!
When you visit this clean and friendly shop you’ll see the courteous staff behind the counter mixing up fresh fruit and vegetable juices to nourish you and ease whatever ails you. The sparkling clean display cases show dozens of tantalizing panini, wraps, sandwiches and organic burgers. The amiable manager, Tommy, said the veggie burger is one of the most popular items for its flavorful blend of veggies, herbs and spices. I devoured the juicy turkey burger, nicely seasoned and served on a multigrain roll with sprouts, tomato, onion, barbecue sauce and veganaise, a non-dairy version of mayonnaise which is light and creamy. The burger was delicious and juicy and I loved the fresh toppings. The sizzling organic beef burger is made from grass-fed beef and cooked to order.
Try to decide among their tempting wraps which include spicy Buffalo chicken, balsamic chicken, veggie wraps, Caesar chicken wrap and more. I’ve often taken one with me on my way to the beach or to Astoria Park for a picnic-style lunch. Panini rest on hot, pressed ciabatta bread and are generously filled with grilled vegetables, chipotle chicken, tuna or chicken salad or their crispy crab cakes. Sandwiches are constructed on multi-grain rolls, olive bread or Rosemary bread and most come in both regular size and mini size. These tasty sandwiches are composed of turkey and Swiss cheese, salami, grilled vegetables, goat cheese, vegan mozzarella and more. The mini sandwiches pair perfectly with their daily, homemade soups that include garden tomato, lentil, carrot ginger, chicken noodle and beef and barley. Check out the salad bar where you’ll find a wide array of fresh vegetables and side dishes. Choose among grilled vegetables and tofu dressed with apple cider vinaigrette, chicken salad with veganaise instead of mayo, curried rice with chick peas, roasted beets, black eye peas, rice and black beans, whole wheat orzo with lemon mint dressing and whole wheat pasta with grilled chicken, just to name a few. Dishes change daily to keep up with the steady clientele. Already reasonably priced, the salad bar and sandwiches are available at half price after 8:00pm. They make a fantastic dinner to pick up on your way home from work since Natural Market is located just outside the R train’s 46th Street station.
Further into Natural Market, an entire supermarket of healthy foods and products awaits you. A refrigerated case boasts fresh, organic produce and fruit including healthy greens, tomatoes, lettuces and more. Organic yogurts, cheeses and Komboucho raw fruit juices get scooped up by like hot cakes. Frozen, organic dinner entrees and frozen vegetables are available too, along with aisles of organic pasta, rice, cereals, cookies, and crackers. There’s a special “gluten free” section of products for those with celiac disease, and even your dog and cat can eat organic pet food from Natural Market.
Natural Market strives to keep you healthy both inside and outside. They offer an extensive selection of teas, herbal supplements, vitamins and nutritional supplements to keep you in tip top health. Take care of the outside too with natural health and beauty products including soaps, deodorants, toothpaste, creams, lotions and more. Even your house should be environmentally sound and they’ve got eco-friendly cleaning products to keep your domicile in good shape too, without harming the environment.
Natural Market is proud to announce that they now offer fresh sushi and locally brewed beer. Don’t be mistaken…we love our sweets and decadent treats too and Natural Market has Junior’s cheesecake, chocolate cake, peanut butter vegan pudding, mini cakes, brownies, homemade muffins, and more. Wash them down with robust coffee, espresso, and cappuccino served hot or cold.
There’s a real sense of community here, with some tables inside and outside. Free Wi-Fi is available to all and the community message board is a great way to connect with your neighbors. Customers are often greeted by their first names and everyone is treated with kindness and courtesy. Natural Market is open seven days a week from 6:30am to 11:00pm weekdays and from 7:30am to 11:00pm on Saturdays and Sundays. Breakfast is served every day so eat in or take a freshly made egg sandwich or muffin on your way to work with you as you descend to the R train. Free delivery is available to your home or office with a $10 minimum. Whether you’re a health nut or just nuts about good food, Natural Market is the place to go. To your health!
